What is Dashain?

This year, from October 3rd – 16th, Nepalese communities around the world are coming together for Dashain celebrations, also known as the Grand Festival of Nepal.

This longest-standing Hindu and Buddhist festival in Nepal (falling either in September or October each year) is a religious harvest festival that celebrates good over evil, and consists of family feasts, the exchanging of gifts, flying kites, and prayers and offerings made to Durga.

Dashain celebrations - river

To honor Dashain celebrations in Nepal, men and women travel to various rivers early each morning and then to sacred shrines in the evening to worship and pay their respects. Sword precessions called Paayaa take place in parts of the Kathmandu Valley, and the Taleju Temple, usually off limits, opens its doors to visitors. On the 10th day communities add tika (a small mark) to their foreheads and wear their finest clothes. Kojagrat Purnima marks the full moon – feasts and blessings are enjoyed among families as celebrations come to a close.

How have Dashain celebrations changed over time?

Dashain celebrations have changed in recent years due to the rise in technology, and globalization. Historically, the festival would center around in-person family time – eating, playing games and group blessings. Now, some believe Dashain has become more commercial; online shopping assisting the preparation and gifting rather than visiting local stores. More and more Nepalese people have also relocated to other countries, so family time is only possible via video call. Nevertheless, Dashain is widely regarded as a charming, traditional and popular Nepalese holiday, and a memorable experience for all those taking part in celebrations across the world.
